Peter McIntyre (Founder)

I've started 2 non-profits that raise millions of dollars per year, ran operations at one of the most successful crypto startups, and advised hundreds of graduates from top universities on how to find fulfilling impactful careers.

Before founding Non-trivial, I spent most of the last 5 years at 80,000 Hours, a non-profit that provides free online research and personalised career advice.

I started out in medical school. After I discovered some of the ideas on this website, I realised I could have a much more scalable impact outside of seeing patients but by that point, I'd spent 7 years studying to be a doctor. I created this website so you don't have to make the same mistakes I did.

We’re a part of the effective altruism community

Effective altruism is a social movement and philosophy using evidence and reason to do the most good.

Many of the ideas on this website about how to help the world originated in the effective altruism community.

Learning about effective altruism has substantially increased our impact, by providing us with important ideas, connections and funding. It might help you too.

Our principles

  • Engaging: learning is awesome; if you’re bored, we’re doing something wrong.
  • No nonsense: no buzzwords or doublespeak; we define or link any jargon.
  • Trustworthy: we clearly state our conclusions and cite our sources; we provide balanced and nuanced content; we are upfront and honest, even when it’s hard.
  • Condensed: well-organised and succinct material, enable you to dive deeper only if you want.

If you don’t think we’re living up to any of these principles, please contact us so we can correct it.

Acknowledgements

Almost none of the ideas here are original, so I’m indebted to the hard work of the researchers and writers who came up with them in the first instance.

I’m deeply grateful to my friends and family for their support through the emotionally tumultuous times of starting something new. I’d particularly like to thank my partner, Alice, who puts up with more than she ought.

Alex Holness-Tofts produced a first draft of the lesson on how the world changed (but any errors are mine).

Thanks to helpful comments from Ben Clifford, Brenton Mayer, Lizka Vaintrob, Max Dalton, Evie Cottrell, Saheb Gulati, and Fin Moorhouse.

Thanks to dozens of people who provided crucial feedback and saved me from my own bad ideas.

Stock illustrations are from unDraw. Custom illustrations are from Anna.

All errors are due to my own poor judgement and no one else’s.
